Senior Food Scientist

The Senior Food Scientist will work within the highly collaborative EWG science team to provide innovative research that directly impacts public health and the environment with a focus on food ingredient and additive safety. Experience and understanding of scientific research regarding ultra processed foods and/or New Approach Methodologies for assessing ingredient toxicity is highly desirable.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct scientific assessment of the safety of ingredients in food in collaboration with EWG’s science team.
- Lead and contribute to scientific research studies and reports, including peer-reviewed research.
- Compile, analyze and manage data on toxicity and regulations of food product ingredients, additives and contaminants.
- Play a key role in providing technical guidance and updates to EWG Food Scores database.
- Lead toxicological hazard and risk evaluations of chemicals found in food.
- Work with the Science team to propose and develop stringent public health-based standards and regulatory recommendations.
- Anticipate emerging impacts and remain up-to-date on new toxicology and environmental health issues relevant to EWG’s work.
- Serve as a public spokesperson for EWG, engaging with national media and policymakers.
- Thrive in a fast-paced setting, adapt quickly to new projects and demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission of the organization.
Qualifications:
- Master’s or PHD degree in a relevant field such as Food Science, Nutrition, Public Health, Environmental Science.
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated experience in managing and completing projects.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders including the public, media, policy holders and internal teams.
- Proficiency in data management and analysis, with experience using relevant tools and software.
- Passion for environmental health and consumer advocacy, with a commitment to advancing EWG’s mission.
Location: Washington, D.C. office.
Compensation: Annual salary range of $100,000-$120,000, Salary is commensurate with experience. EWG offers fully paid, excellent health care, paid parental leave and a tax-deferred 403(b) plan, including matched contributions.
