Washington, DC

Overview

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading 501(c)(3) environmental health research and advocacy organization, is seeking a Digital Content Strategist to support and advance our work in the Digital team.

Since 1993, EWG has worked to shine a spotlight on policies, practices, and industry behaviors that threaten public health and the environment. Through research, policy advocacy, and communications, we empower the public and decision-makers with the facts to drive positive change.

About the role

Reporting to the EVP, Marketing, the Digital Content Strategist is a creative words person at heart who thrives in a fast-paced, high-output environment. This role requires someone comfortable juggling multiple priorities and moving quickly from idea to execution while maintaining quality and clarity. This role is designed for someone who thinks beyond individual pieces of content and instead approaches digital communications holistically – understanding how messaging, storytelling, audience engagement and calls to action connect across communications platforms and campaigns. The strategist develops compelling, human-centered content to advance EWG’s mission, with a focus on storytelling, idea generation and continuous refinement based on audience insights and performance learnings.

Working across teams, the Digital Content Strategist connects ideas and messaging across social media, email, SMS, website landing pages and other communications channels to ensure cohesive, high-quality content that resonates with audiences wherever they engage. The role also leverages emerging tools, including AI, to support content development and creative optimization across platforms.

This role offers significant opportunity for creativity, initiative and strategic influence. The successful candidate will bring not only strong content creation skills, but also the ability to identify opportunities, shape digital storytelling strategies and drive engagement across EWG's communications channels. We are looking for someone who is excited to help lead the evolution of EWG's digital content program and contribute meaningfully to EWG's mission and impact.

Primary duties and responsibilities

Core content responsibilities

  • Serve as the connective tissue between ideas and impact. You’ll sit at the center of EWG’s content engine, turning complex science and policy into content people actually want to read and share. In a news cycle that never slows down, you will help us stay ahead of it.
  • Turn complicated into compelling. Whether a new pesticide study or a policy win, your job is to find the hook that makes someone stop scrolling. You’ll craft narratives that work across email, social, SMS and web, adapting tone and format for each channel.
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of EWG’s tone of voice, ensuring it resonates with audiences and flexes appropriately across channels while staying true to the brand
  • Analyze content and audience performance data to refine messaging strategy, optimize engagement, and inform future campaign development

Social: Partner with the social media team to translate our strategy into compelling social-first creative with strong hooks and calls to action. Staying on top of trends and cultural moments will be key to this person’s success.

Email: Own email content strategy and writing, crafting compelling, audience-focused messaging that drives engagement and action, and evolves based on performance insights

AI: Use AI-enabled tools across the content process, from idea generation to drafting and refinement, to improve quality, increase efficiency and support nimble execution across channels

Cross-functional collaboration: Collaborate with communications, creative, science, policy, and partnerships teams to surface stories, align messaging and bring complex subject matter to life through content

Community management: Own EWG’s community voice: Establish the tone and personality guidelines that guide the way EWG engages with its social audience, and review community responses drafted by the Social Media Associate to ensure they are accurate and on-brand and reflect EWG’s voice.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of experience developing content across digital channels, including email, web and social
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex or technical subject matter accessible and engaging for general audiences – comfortable working from dense source material (research, data, policy documents) to surface compelling narratives
  • Background in advocacy, environmental health, public health journalism or mission-driven communications strongly preferred
  • A creative thinker who brings fresh, bold ideas and isn’t afraid to share them
  • A strong writer with a curiosity for finding the right words, understanding why they resonate, and how they drive engagement and action
  • Ability to adapt messaging for different audiences, platforms and contexts
  • Proactive and collaborative, with a track record of taking initiative and working effectively across teams
